Week of the Young Child 2025

March 19, 2025

Around 20 small children sit on the floor of a large atrium holding open a parachute. Another group of small children sit around a second parachute on the far end of the atrium. Several adults are sitting and standing around the children with the parachutes.

During the week of April 7-11, the A. Sophie Rogers School for Early Learning in the Schoenbaum Family Center is participating in Week of the Young Child® with a variety of enriching take-home activities and special events for our children and their families.

Week of the Young Child® was developed by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), which describes the event as a “fun-filled week celebrating young children and their families with hands-on, collaborative activities encouraging movement and healthy lifestyles through music, food, and art.”

Here is how the Schoenbaum Family Center and the A. Sophie Rogers School for Early Learning are celebrating Week of the Young Child® in 2025.

Music Monday, April 7

A graphic design showing musical notation

Music is an important part of developing your child’s early literacy and motor skills through dancing, singing, and listening. We will welcome the Ohio State Community Music School from 4:45 – 5:15 p.m. for a demonstration of their music classes for little ones.

At-Home Ideas:

  • Have a family dance party with your favorite tunes.
  • Recreate a “story time at home” by listening to Miss Sarah’s Family Storytime Spotify playlist: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7q6RSFMMYMPXPXm6XjfNhF

Tasty Tuesday, April 8

A table holds copies of children's books along with a sign that reads "Week of the Young Child / Tasty Tuesday / Take a food-themed book and a snack!" On the side of the table are two bowls: one has apples and bananas, the other has nutritional bars.

Healthy eating is an important part of growing up. Join us for Food is Awesome! — a special family storytime focused on foods that help your body function and grow. An after-school snack will be provided by Chefs Mark and Joe as a special treat!

At-Home Ideas:

  • Make a snack or a meal together as a family. Encourage your child to participate in measuring the ingredients. Math and science are important for kindergarten readiness.
  • Talk about your family’s favorite meals. Are they all the same? What are your favorite things to make at home? What foods are important for your family?

Work Together Wednesday, April 9

Young children gather around the edge of a parachute as a woman with a headset microphone talks to them.

Working collaboratively to achieve a common goal is a valuable way to develop your child’s social and emotional skills. All of the classrooms will work collaboratively during a special parachute play program, and our social work interns, Gianna and Maia, prepared a take-home kit for at-home fun!

At-Home Ideas:

  • Use a flat sheet for at-home parachute play. Visit https://www.weareteachers.com/parachute-games/ for fun parachute ideas.
  • Create a DIY “parachute” fort at home and read your favorite books underneath!

Artsy Thursday, April 10

A paintbrush is seen about to touch a painting being created on an easel. The painting has an abstract design, with blue, red and yellow sections intersected with white and brown lines.

We Amplify Voices (WAV) will be joining us for program exploring self-identity through artmaking. WAV is a local organization that amplifies marginalized voices through art in the community. Visit their website to learn more about their events: https://www.weamplifyvoices.org

At-Home Ideas:

  • Work on a creative challenge together at home! Draw a monster that has a special power. Draw your family.
  • Learn something about a well-known artist like Mary Blair, Aminah Robinson, or Elijah Pierce. Share your newly learned fact with someone special!

Family Friday, April 12

A cartoon shows two rows of adults and young children dancing together.

Family engagement in your child’s education is central to their academic success now and later in life. You are your child’s first and best teacher. Take a moment to celebrate family by joining a Family Dance Party DJ’ed by an A. Sophie Rogers School dad!

At-Home Ideas:

  • Have a family game night at home. You could play board games, card games, or written games like Tic-Tac-Toe.
  • Be an at-home helper. Work together to accomplish a household duty like taking a family pet for a walk or doing the dishes.
