Sending your child off to kindergarten is an exciting time for families. It can also be an anxious time for parents who want to prepare for a smooth transition but have questions about the process. To help, Anneliese Johnson, principal at the A. Sophie Rogers School for Early Learning, shared her expertise at a recent Family Brown Bag workshop at the Schoenbaum Family Center.
Johnson’s tips for family support include talking about the transition with your child, visiting the new school and playground, and going to new school events. She also suggests:
- Talking with your child about the transition as an exciting adventure
- Becoming familiar with development and practicing skills with children in a fun way prior to kindergarten transition
- Reading children’s kindergarten books (Miss Bindergarten series, The Night Before Kindergarten, etc.)
