COVID Guidelines
The early childhood programs at OSU have received updated guidance from the OSU Medical Center based upon current CDC guidelines.
- Adults and children can choose to wear a mask at Ohio State at any time. The university’s mask-optional policy will be in effect at the A. Sophie Rogers School for Early Learning.
- If a child in the program tests positive for COVID, the child must remain out of school for 10 days.
- Children who have a known exposure to a COVID-positive individual may continue to attend school as long as they are not showing symptoms, regardless of vaccination status.
- Families will be notified if their child has a COVID-19 exposure at school, but the child need not quarantine, and the classroom will not close.
- If an exposed child begins to show symptoms, they may be required to provide a negative COVID-19 test prior to return to school. Families will be asked to access a test from their medical provider and provide results/doctor’s note for return; tests will not be provided at the school.
- Families should defer to their physician’s guidance regarding whether their child should attend school if exposed to COVID-19 outside of child school (e.g., at home or in the community).
- Changes to drop off/pick up procedures:
- Families may escort their child to their classroom in the morning; health screens in the lobby will be discontinued beginning Tuesday, September 6.
- Please take your child all the way to their classroom door, make contact with your child’s teacher and say a brief good-bye.
- As a new habit for children and adults, this may take a little extra time at first.
- Teachers are happy to discuss your child’s education and development via an appointment upon request; please keep classroom conversations brief so that the entire classroom may be properly supervised at all times.
- To facilitate this adjustment in operations, A. Sophie Rogers staff will continue to pick up children and bring them to families in the lobby for pick-up for some time.
Second Step Prosocial Curriculum in Preschool Classrooms
A. Sophie Rogers’ Couple and Family Therapy intern, Annie, will join our preschool classrooms on Friday mornings to incorporate lessons from Second Step, a prosocial curriculum for early learning. Second Step is an evidence-based curriculum designed to prepare children for kindergarten. The curriculum teaches children self-regulation and social-emotional skills. Second Step guides children in developing tools for emotion management, navigating social relationships, and problem solving. Through engaging lessons, readings, sing-alongs, animated puppet shows, and brain-building activities, children learn the importance of listening, paying attention, managing their behaviors, and getting along with others.
Second Step Social-Emotional Learning provides language and tools, from perspective-taking to calming down techniques, that children can use across contexts and settings to solve everyday challenges. Children become more self-sufficient by learning words for emotions and interpersonal dynamics to resolve conflict and convey their feelings in a healthy and productive way.
Second Step uses a holistic, coordinated, and community-wide approach to create supportive and inclusive environments for equitable learning. Curriculum extends beyond the classroom by giving families take-home activities to continue the social and emotional learning process with their children at home.
Research demonstrates the positive effects of universal, classroom-based social-emotional learning programs for children. It has been widely recognized that benefits are even greater when children experience social-emotional learning throughout their day across, home, school, and out-of-school environments, and across developmental stages. Families will be able to access take-home activities in their teacher’s weekly curriculum updates.
For information or tips on how to incorporate Second Step practices into your own bedtime, mealtime, or other routines, contact Annie at schoenbaumtherapy@gmail.com.
2022 Symposium on Children
The 9th annual Symposium on Children will be held virtually on Friday, October 28 from 12:30-4:30pm. This year’s theme will focus on investments in children. The event is free and open to all who are interested, but registration is required.
Keynote speaker Dr. Kirabo Jackson is a labor economist at Northwestern University researching education and social policy issues. Dr. Jackson will share his insights on how education policies impact children’s lifelong outcomes through adulthood, including the impact of sustained investments from early childhood into the K-12 years. The event will also showcase additional research on investments; explore funding alternatives and learn from communities who have innovated in this realm; and inspire us toward greater resolve and courage when it comes to how much we spend on our youngest citizens.
