This month, the A. Sophie Rogers School for Early Learning invited families to stop by the library book display and pick up a book about the real-life figures of Black history. The library also offered a pop-up book giveaway featuring Black authors, illustrators, and stories.
The giveaway books included:
Black History Month and our mission at the Schoenbaum Family Center
Together, the Schoenbaum Family Center and their partners at the Crane Center for Early Childhood Research and Policy celebrate Black contributions interwoven into our day-to-day work in early childhood research, practice, and policy. From those who were early pioneers in the field, to scientists today who research ongoing inequities in early child care and education, we recognize and celebrate all Black history — both in the past and in the making.
Our celebration of Black History Month is one aspect of our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. We believe exposure to views and cultures other than one’s own is an essential part of education, and of life. Such engagement expands our horizons, enables understanding across difference, and promotes intellectual growth.
DID YOU KNOW … that the A. Sophie Rogers School hosts family-led heritage celebrations? Enrolled families can volunteer to make a display or join the children for an in-person program to highlight their family’s celebrations, traditions, and cultural heritage. In addition to celebrating Black History Month this February, the school also held a Lunar New Year story time and a Saraswati Puja celebration.
