NEWS
Library Update
September was an exciting month – from welcoming new families to lots of family engagement programs! ASR hosted its first ever Family Resource Fair where families had a chance to meet our school interns Ari Dillard (Social Work) and Marcel Jacobs (School Psychology). We also hosted representatives from a variety of local community organizations such as the Columbus Metropolitan Libraries, Columbus City Schools, and the City of Columbus.
In addition, OSU Engineering faculty member Dr. Betty Lise Anderson visited to lead preschool classrooms in the Cartesian Diver experiment. Preschool students learned about the properties of water and oxygen.
Families if you haven’t already, please fill out this survey which will determine what subjects and types of books you would like for your child’s 2023/24 Book Bundles. If you have multiple children attending ASR, please complete the survey for each child.
October program highlights are the Hispanic Heritage Storytime on Tuesday, October 3rd led by ASR teacher Miss Lucia, and a visit from the BUGmobile on Tuesday, October 17th. See the events page for the full list of upcoming programs or click here for a downloadable version!
School Psychology and Social Work Interns
ASR partners with our college’s Educational Studies Department to support School Psychology graduate students. We are fortunate to have Marcel Jacobs returning for a second school year. Marcel will work with school administrators and teachers to devise curricular and learning supports for children and classrooms, collect classroom observations and interventions, and support the preschool prosocial curriculum implementation and coaching.
Marcel is a 4th year PhD student studying School Psychology at The Ohio State University. Marcel has gained training and experience in providing students support in academic, behavior, and social emotional competence. He has learned to do so through the implementation of evidence-based practices, providing assessments, and collaboration with school staff and families. He is also a Graduate Teaching Assistant for OSU’s School Psychology program, teaching both a cognitive and achievement assessment course. During his time at Ohio State, Marcel has engaged in various research projects examining social emotional and academic outcomes of students.
Another important ASR partnership is with the College of Social Work. Ariyana Dillard joins us for the school year and will support family engagement work such as weekly Coffee Connections, author visits and other special events. She is available to support families in areas such as obtaining housing, food, child care benefits or other resources.
Ariyana Dillard is a 4th year Social Work student at Ohio State University, minoring in Communication and Human Development and Family Sciences. She is passionate about providing families with essential services and resources to meet their physical and emotional needs. As an intern, Ariyana has been trained in problem-solving, advocacy, and compassionate service delivery. She is also an active member of the National Association of Social Workers and is dedicated to making a positive impact in the lives of others.
Family Resource Fair Recap
Thank you to everyone who made our Family Resource Fair a success! In case you missed it, please see the handout with local resource and information contacts and information for families with young children. For more information and resources, reach out to ASR’s Social Work intern, Ari Dillard at 614-247-7007.
ASR Fall Assessments and Family Conferences
During the fall, teachers assess children in social, cognitive, and physical domains as required by the state of Ohio. These assessments provide a snapshot of your child’s development and help the school to plan and implement curriculum and activities targeted to each child’s individual goals and strengths. Be on the lookout for communication from your child’s teachers about arranging a family conference in October to discuss your child’s education and daily experiences at school. Friday, October 20 has been set aside for family conferences. Reviewing these assessments and screenings are one part of conferences; discussing school friendships, learning and setting educational goals together are important parts of the discussion. We look forward to meeting with you!
