NEWS
Week of the Young Child, April 8-12
During the week of April 8-12, the National Association for the Education of Young Children is sponsoring Week of the Young Child, a “fun-filled week celebrating young children and their families with hands-on, collaborative activities encouraging movement and healthy lifestyles through music, food, and art.” The A. Sophie Rogers School and the Schoenbaum Family Center are participating throughout the week with a variety of enriching take-home activities and special events for our children and their families.
Some of the special events and activities include a Food is Awesome! family story time on Tuesday, April 9, focused on foods that help your body function and grow, and a Puppy Painting Party in the Art Studio on Thursday, April 11, with a visit from Buckeye Paws.

Library Update
Prior to the end of the year, Sarah will be reaching out to families who have long overdue books. The goal is to get books returned to the library so our school community can utilize those materials. If your child is really excited about a book that you’ve borrowed and is long overdue, please let Sarah know so she can include that title in an upcoming Book Bundle.
Heritage Celebrations
Upcoming heritage months and celebrations are:
May – Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month
June – Pride Month; Juneteenth
If your family would like to partner with Sarah on a program or display in commemoration of these months or holidays, contact her at her email Simpson.962@osu.edu or stop by the library.
Total Solar Eclipse: April 8, 2024
The solar eclipse that is passing through Ohio on April 8 will see nearly 95% of the sun covered by the moon here in Columbus. Areas to our north and west will see 100% coverage.
The Ohio State University’s Columbus Campus will remain open on April 8, as will the A. Sophie Rogers School. In Columbus, the moon will begin to cover the sun at 1:55 p.m. and will have passed from in front of the sun at 4:27 p.m., with the maximum coverage around 3:12 p.m.
Several schools in Columbus will be closed full or partial day on Monday, April 8 due to the total solar eclipse. This is due to anticipated increase in traffic, darkness during school dismissal, and to ensure safe viewing for children. Although ASR will be open on April 8, classrooms will not be viewing the eclipse with children. The eclipse will occur during rest and indoor activity time, and it is not feasible to ensure eye safety for very young children outdoors during this event.
Pre-K Vision Screening Follow-Ups
All Pre-K students who were present on March 7 had a vision screening conducted by The Ohio State University College of Optometry. The vision-screening protocol used is 95-97% effective in identifying children who have ocular or vision problems. This unique method was jointly developed by ophthalmology, public health, and optometry professionals.
Results of the vision screenings were sent home in mailboxes that day. If you have questions about the results, or you would like further referral for a full vision exam for you child, please contact your pediatrician or The Ohio State University Vision Clinics at greatvision.osu.edu, or 614-292-2020.
Read Together, Grow Together
Read Together, Grow Together, a campaign created by our research partner the Crane Center for Early Childhood Research and Policy along with ReadOhio, offers eight evidence-based tips that families can use at home when reading with their children.
The Read Together, Grow Together website contains details about each of the tips, along with videos, downloadable fact sheets, even a link to get free books for children under age 5.

Best Wishes to Interns Ari and Marcel
The internships of Ari Dillard, our social work intern, and Marcel Jacobs, our school psychology intern, come to an end with the conclusion of Ohio State’s spring semester. During this past school year, Ari supported the weekly Coffee Connections with parents, created family bulletin boards, and facilitated kindergarten enrollment for several families. Marcel supported classroom programming interventions.
We thank them both for their work with children and families and wish them all the best in their careers!
Coffee Connections
This is a weekly, informal opportunity to connect with other A. Sophie Rogers families as well as school staff.
Stop in the library after dropping off your child between 8:30-9:30 a.m. Friday for coffee, tea, and muffins, and to have a chat.
YogARTS at A. Sophie Rogers School
Our YogARTS music and movement series will continue in April with the third session of the series titled “I am, We are”: a family lesson on reflection (the mirror).
You are welcome to bring a yoga mat from home and there will also be mat space provided.
The session takes place Thursday, April 4 from 4:30-5:15 p.m.
Featured Project
Encouraging empathy
This month’s Featured Project looks at how teachers in an infant/toddler classroom nurture empathy among the children as the children begin to develop emotions and recognize those same emotions in others.
