April 28, 2025

A young child wearing a green jumper with a purple hood holds a green sheet of paper with crayon lines and a pasted Polaroid picture to show to a man wearing a colorful blue, pink and yellow patterned shirt and a black dreadlock cap. The man is seated with his arms on a small table, while the child is standing. On the table is a plastic bin with crayons and a Polaroid camera.
Students created artwork during Artsy Thursday as part of Week of the Young Child in April.

NEWS

Teacher Appreciation Week, May 5-9

The calendar for the A. Sophie Rogers School for Early Learning for May 2025
Click the image to view a PDF of May’s school event calendar

Teacher Appreciation Week is the first full week of May, this year occurring from Monday, May 5, through Friday, May 9. This is a week to honor teachers and recognize the lasting contributions they make to our lives.

How can families contribute to our celebration of our teachers?

  • Note cards will be available in Town Square to write a note of thanks for classroom teachers.
  • Bring in a flower or bouquet to add to vases in the classroom. This can be a tulip from your yard or a bouquet from a florist! Together the classroom can grow a bouquet of thankfulness to enjoy.
  • If you would like to contribute to school-wide gifts for staff, cash can be donated in the black mailbox at the front desk in provided envelopes by Friday, May 2.
  • If you are available to assemble gift items and/or your business would like to make a donation of items, please reach out to Miss Sarah directly at simpson.962@osu.edu.

Farewell Celebration for Cascade the Therapy Dog

The head of Cascade, a fawn-colored greyhound, is petted by young children
Cascade has been a favorite friend of students during storytime and other school events.

Cascade, our “Ulti-mutt” therapy and reading dog, is moving to Indiana for her mom’s (Carrie Anne) new job. The school will have a big celebration on Thursday, May 15, from 4:45-5:15 p.m. in Town Square to thank Cascade and her mom, and we would love to have families join us for her send-off. Cascade has enriched the lives of so many families and staff at our school. We are sad to see her go but excited for her new adventure!

Library Update

Teacher Appreciation Week is May 5-9. The school administration has planned a week of activities to celebrate our hard-working and dedicated teaching staff. If you are interested in volunteering your time to help with preparation of these activities, please contact Sarah at simpson.962@osu.edu or stop by the library.

In May, families with long overdue books will be receiving a list of items to turn in for collection inventory in June.

Week of the Young Child

A librarian sits on a padded seat while reading and displaying a children's book to a group of preschoolers sitting on the floor in front of her.
On Tasty Tuesday, a food-themed storytime was held.
On Work Together Wednesday, students participated in a special parachute play program.

During the week of April 7-11, the school participated in Week of the Young Child with a variety of take-home activities and special events for our children and their families. Each day had a theme: Music Monday, Tasty Tuesday, Work Together Wednesday, Artsy Thursday, and Family Friday. This year’s Week of the Young Child was a tremendous success, and we want to extend a special thank you to Dr. Sabree for DJ’ing our Family Friday dance party!

Featured Project: Cardboard Connections

A young child looks out a heart-shaped hole of a large cardboard box that has been fashioned into a castle in a preschool classroom.
Cardboard boxes became the inspiration for nearly three months of learning for students in a preschool classroom.

Teachers introduced a stack of cardboard boxes and brought them into their preschool classroom, sparking comments and questions from the children. The children decided to create a castle from the boxes, and the project engaged the students in academic, motor and social-emotional learning for nearly three months.
