Throughout the coronavirus pandemic, the teachers from the A. Sophie Rogers School for Early Learning are sharing at-home activities to help you with ideas on how to best support your child’s development.
COUNTING AND SORTING ITEMS THAT REPRESENT NUMBERS 1-20
Materials:
- numbers 1-20 printed/written on note cards or paper
- items with features that can be counted such as dominoes and playing cards.
Directions: Lay out numbers 1-20 in order, this is a great chance to focus on cardinality with your child. This activity is to focus on identifying numbers one through twenty and beginning to quantify these symbols. This can also be executed as a treasure hunt or number search for items that match numerically (an 8 of spades card being placed with the number 8) or items that represent the numerals (4 dots on a toy ladybug being placed on the number 4). Math language can help enhance this activity “you found a domino with 9 dots total, can you find one with more dots? Now find something with fewer.”
BUILDING AND TRACING STRUCTURES TO INCREASE SPATIAL AWARENESS
Materials:
- your child’s preferred building materials (legos, magnatiles, wooden blocks)
- large paper (you can repurpose newspaper, cut open paper grocery bags or cardboard boxes
- markers/writing utensil
Directions: Draw various shapes on the paper and encourage your child to build within the lines, then encourage your child to build a different structure with the materials and trace around it when finished. Try to fill the newly created space in different ways and use different building materials or combine them for an added challenge. Rulers and tape measures can also be incorporated.
SPRING OBSERVATIONS
Materials:
- paper
- crayons
- clipboard or surface to draw/write on
- watercolors
Directions: Discuss the changes that are taking place outside, bring crayons and paper on a walk or while spending time outdoors and have your child draw their observations. When returning home you can have your child add more detail using watercolors over the crayon. This will create a wax resist and allow an opportunity to reflect.
